Whenever I create a map of mother-daughter relationships, one of the first things I notice is that when women’s needs go unvoiced or ignored, it can have a negative impact on their emotional well-being. Even in my mother-daughter map, I see generations of women whose voices were either silenced or ignored, or thatโs just not what we did. Silencing leads to stress, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and more. It can be challenging to let your voice be heard and showcase your true self in your family, let alone the world. However, living a fulfilling life is all about embracing your true self, your voice, and your uniqueness and letting your individuality shine. Check out these insightful tips to help you find your own voice:
1. Don’t be afraid to be a change agent in our family. What are some of the themes, patterns, or beliefs of the women in your family that youโd like to improve upon? Change can be a positive thing. I often say that my grandmother would be proud of the woman Iโve become.
2. Take inspiration from the stories of the other SHEreos in your family who dared to be different. Every family has a woman who goes against the status quo. Let their courage motivate you to unleash your voice and unique gifts into the world.
3. Being true to yourself is the epitome of bravery, and it’s something that people genuinely admire. Many of us have had to operate out of our adaptive self. During my time in the military, my adaptive self helped me adapt to the environment and culture of being a soldier.
4. Occasionally, people may not understand your confidence to let your voice be heard but don’t let that hold you back. Youโre breaking generational patterns and creating new norms in your family and society as a whole. So, Keep shining bright!
5. Expressing your opinions is a beautiful way to show off your unique personality and perspectives! It’s a great way to share your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs with others. When you share your opinions, you’re showing that you’re confident in your own ideas and are open to hearing from others, too. It’s always empowering to know that your voice is being heard and that your contributions are valued, and itโs changing the narrative. So go ahead and speak up; don’t be afraid to share your thoughts. You never know how it might positively impact someone else or even change the world for the better!
6. Find your tribe. Surrounding yourself with women who share your interests, values, and passions is awesome! And you know what’s even better? A safe and supportive space where you can be yourself and your voice is heard loud and clear. Being around women who are also learning to speak, who encourage you to speak, and express yourself freely without trading off being able to speak for being loved. When you find your tribe, you create a sense of community that can make you feel more connected and supported. And when you feel supported, your self-esteem, confidence, and motivation can soar!
Remember, it’s all about stepping out, embracing your uniqueness, and making your voice heard. The world needs your voice, unique talents, and gifts, so don’t be afraid to let your light shine. You’ve got this!
